Peter Evo's poem about the proposed new stadium.
It was not a match remembered by lots for its importance, after all a home game against the Villa in the Premiership will not be the most prestigious event marked in your calendar!
I had the privilege of going to Anfield last fall, in October. I was over visiting a good friend. He and his girlfriend are HUGE supporters, she a season ticket holder. They managed to secure an extra for me for "European Night" vs. Borussia Dortmund.
I have been following the Reds at Anfield since the late 70's (when I was old enough to travel up on my own!!!). I remember the days of the Kop, the Euro nights, the cup games, the league wins, and the barren years. I have so many fond memories of standing on the Kop, cheering on my heroes.
No, nothing to do with treason and plot, and not an advert for Standard fireworks either, though gunpowder does come in to it later.
The time, 1943. The place, on board a tram, yes, a tram (No. 27?) coming up from Exchange station past the bombed out Rotunda theatre with its EWS signs painted on the wall.
It was my first time at Anfield. We, my Dad and I -a 13 year old at the time, had come over on what seemed a long boat trip from Dublin but I felt it would be worth it. Saturday morning after breakfast and the anticipation was growing in me.
He drew near to the goal...the Kop went quiet...the whole fuckin stadium was quiet. He shot, it went in...and Davy Fairclough was legend.
When I think of all the glorious times from a youth growing up in Liverpool to present day, Anfield has been at the heart of most of them.
When asked what my favourite Liverpool game was there is absolutely no question in my mind.
LFC Online contributor and author if One Boy And His Kop and My Youth My Kop, Evo recounts his early visits to Anfield.
